So, how did your Thursday morning begin?
Well, on the European Tour they sloshed through the opening round of the Joburg Open in South Africa, where Paul Peterson grabbed the clubhouse lead with a nine birdie 62. Play was eventually suspended in the afternoon because of saturation from steady rain/poor playing conditions with a bunch of players still needing to finish their first 18.
One of those was Irishman Paul Dunne. And no matter how bad you think your Thursday workday start was, get a load of where Dunne’s opening drive ended up!:
Play it as it lies ????????️
FYI. He made par. pic.twitter.com/dWajvVjM5p

Yes, that’s Dunne’s ball in the mud off to the side of the first….in the parking area. And, as the tweet from the European Tour says, he hit a tremendous second shot out of that slop and still made par!
Dunne went on to birdie the fifth and sixth holes and remained at -2 until play was halted while he was on 16. He’s seven off the lead currently, but no one had a better recovery to start their round than that.
So, top flight players and hackers alike, take note: it’s not where your drive ended up, it’s what you do after that!
