This edition of ‘Taking the Weekend Off’ from the Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades is not a “weekend off” in the true sense as many of those who missed the cut actually had to tee it up on Saturday due to the torrential rainfall that blanketed the Los Angeles area.
Hideki Matsuyama and Dustin Johnson began the week with the knowledge that one of them could overtake Jason Day for No. 1 in the world with a victory at Riviera.
Johnson has a history of playing well at Riviera and that continued as he took the lead into the third round following back-to-back 66s.
Matsuyama went the complete opposite route with a second round 80 that had him sitting at 6-over, well behind the cut that was EVEN par.
Defending champion Bubba Watson WD’d on Saturday with two holes remaining in his second round. He gave no reason for his withdrawal.
Former U.S. Amateur champion Kelly Kraft got into the field this week at the Genesis Open by virtue of his runner-up finish last week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He was among those who took the weekend off after posting 6-over following then second round.
Notables who missed the cut at Riviera include Vijay Singh, Ryan Moore, Brandt Snedeker, Charl Schwartzel, Careerbuilder Challenge winner Hudson Swafford, Ricky Barnes, Tony Finau and Ernie Els.
